On the occasion of the 19th annual Jeju Forum, UNITAR CIFAL Jeju International Training Center organized an Expert Seminar under the title of Harmony in the Digital Age: Exploring AI Powered-Paths to Peace Building in Jeju Island on May 31, 2024. The Seminar aimed to explore how AI plays roles in the peace-building efforts among many innovations AI could bring about. Nowadays many international organizations have been employing AI based technology to aggregate data from conflict zones, thereby analyzing and predicting whether conflicts or their resolutions are imminent.
In that sense, speakers shared success
stories and challenges concerning the effective utilization of AI technologies
for the peace-building efforts. In particular, one speaker from the UN shared
the efforts of the UN to prioritize AI technologies to pioneer transformative
approaches to global peace-building efforts. Other speaker shared thoughts on
how predictive AI technologies can offer solutions for addressing conflicts caused
by climate amplified food security. Subsequent
discussions focused on the ethical implications of AI technology and emphasized
the importance of careful use and design of data and correct interpretation of data
with the expanding AI technologies.

제주국제연수센터는 2024년 5월 31일 ‘디지털 시대의 조화: 평화구축을
위한 AI의 역할’을 주제로 한 전문가 세미나를 제주도에서
개최하였다. 금번 세미나는 AI가 가져올 혁신적인 변화 가운데
평화구축 분야에 있어 AI가 기여할 수 있는 방안을 살펴보고자 하였다.
최근 국제기구들은 분쟁지역에서 데이터를 수집하기 위해 AI 기술을 활용하고 있으며, 이를 통해 분쟁의 발생 혹은 해결이 임박했는지 분석하거나 예측하여 왔다.
이러한 관점에서 금번 세미나 전문가들은 평화구축을 위한 인공지능(AI) 활용의
우수사례 및 도전과제를 공유하였다. 특히 유엔의 발표자는 국제적인 평화구축 노력에 있어 AI를 활용한 혁신적인 접근법을 소개하였다. 다른 발표자는 예측형 AI 기술이 어떻게 기후변화로 증폭된 식량안보 관련 분쟁을 해결할 수 있는지에 대한 의견을 공유하였다. 이어지는 토론에서 패널들은 AI의 활용에 있어 고려해야 하는 AI 윤리에 초점을 두고 데이터의 신중한 활용 및 데이터의 올바른 해석의 중요성을 강조하였다.
