Background
According to the ‘UN
Framework for the Immediate Socio-Economic Response to COVID-19’ paper published
in April 2020, women, older persons, children and youth, those working in urban
informal sectors, and many other marginalized people are included in at-risk
populations experiencing the highest degree of socio-economic exclusion. In responding to the crisis, therefore, it will be critical
to pay specific attention to the dire situations that those people suffer.
Women and girls in urban
informal settlements, in particular, have very limited access to employment and
to essential services at school and in public life as well. The measures including
lockdowns and social distancing to contain the pandemic have made it much more
challenging for women in urban slums to carry on their economic activities for
livelihoods. Especially, those dependent on daily wages cannot afford to leave work.
There is also a growing concern about their safety issues. During COVID-19,
sexual harassment and different forms of violence against women continue to
occur in public spaces[1]. The
realities as such have a negative impact on women’s freedom of movement,
livelihood opportunities, and access to services.
With these realities in
mind, CIFAL Jeju organizes the second round of its webinar on the resilient
livelihoods of the urban poor in the COVID-19 context. The event will explore the
challenges and opportunities in responding to the crisis from a gender
perspective, and discuss policy frameworks for COVID-19 response plans with the
livelihoods of women and girls in mind.

and policies can be adopted to address the livelihood issues facing women and
girls
To share ideas on how to ensure
more equal, inclusive and resilient societies in the COVID-19 context
Target Audience
This program is open to government
officials and practitioners from CSOs who have been working in the area related
to urban poor issues and/or urban resilience.
