Workshop on

Leveraging Social Dialogue for Better-adapted Responses to a Changing World of Work

15 ~ 24 March 2022, Jeju, Republic of Korea – UNITAR CIFAL Jeju organized a virtual workshop on “Leveraging Social Dialogue for Better-adapted Responses to a Changing World of Work” between 15 and 24 March 2022. The event invited 38 representatives, from the governmental sector along with NGOs and Academia. They came from 15 countries including: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Panama,  Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Vietnam and France.

For this workshop, CIFAL Jeju made use of Gather, an avatar-based, virtual gathering space where the participants were able to feel the actual ambience of the in-person workshop. A Gather town in the platform was modeled around the actual seminar room of CIFAL Jeju and the space was used to facilitate a group activity and promote more active networking among peer participants.

This four-day program provided the participants with a learning opportunity where the invited speakers, Mr. Diego López González(Trade Union Development Cooperation Network/ITUC), Mr. Jean-Louis Lambeau and Mr. Julien Magnat(ILO), Ms. Rahnuma Salam Khan(development economist and a migration specialist), and Ms. Veronica Nilsson(OECD Directorate) shared extensive expertise on social dialogue for better-adapted responses to a complex crisis in varying contexts. The program touched upon the role of social dialogue in the context of social protection responses to different crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate risks, social dialogue in promoting lifelong learning and skills development, and the need for further social dialogue in a changing world of work driven by technological advances and demographic shifts.

The participants were involved in a group discussion in a Gather platform, where they analyzed the inclusiveness of the social dialogue institutions in their country context using the SDM-SDI method of the ILO, followed by sharing a group work, the action plan to implement the inclusiveness of the SDI based on the analysis on the final day of the workshop.
