Environmental sustainability is defined as a responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow for long-term environmental quality. It is inevitably associated with the perspectives on human needs and well-being. In this sense, environmental sustainability is mutually reinforcing economic and societal sustainability. In other words, it is essential to live within the earth’s planetary boundary so as not to jeopardize the ability for future generations to meet their needs.

As part of the global and local efforts to meet the human-ecosystem equilibrium, CIFAL Jeju/JITC organizes environmental workshops on a variety of relevant topics like climate change and green growth, carbon-free development, waste management, e-mobility, and environmentally sound technologies. Serving as a venue to share policy experiences and action plans, the Center joins the effort of the global community in moving towards a more sustainable future.

[2021 September 3 ~ 10] Capacity-building Workshop on Roadmap to Smart Mobility: Inclusive & Sustainable Solutions 기사를 twitter로 보내기 기사를 facebook으로 보내기 2021.09.24

3 - 10 September 2021 - Centre International de Formation des Autorités et Leaders Jeju (CIFAL Jeju) organized a Capacity-Building Workshop on Roadmap to Smart Mobility: Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions. The workshop invited 40 participants from 15 countries in the Asia and Pacific including Cambodia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Laos, as well as Chile and Ecuador.

One of the lessons learned from a previous workshop on transport was that electric vehicles are still far-fetched modality in most of developing countries. As there often are more two- and three-wheelers than private car in these developing countries, a different and more localized transport vision needs to be established. In this regards, CIFAL Jeju commissioned a research project on e-mobility options that can be adapted in developing country context, which was presented at the main session of the workshop.

Dr. Hun-Ki Lee, Head of Global Transport Cooperation Center at Korea Transport Institute (KOTI) shared the findings of the research he conducted for 13 cities of Asia and Pacific developing countries. Ms. Beatrice Chng, Program Manager at ICLEI East Asia Secretariat guided the participants through establishing a right vision for Asia and the Pacific region, while Dr. Shang-hoon Son, Research Fellow at Jeju Research Institute shared how Jeju Island was able to implement electric mobility policies. Mr. Jason Hyunjong Wi, CSO at SOCAR also introduced sharing mobility vision that has a potential to scale up not just in Korea but also in other parts of the region.

The workshop comprises of three sessions including an online Pre-session. Participants greeted each other through a virtual zoom platform during the Pre-session and engaged in the Cityshare tutorial, which CIFAL Jeju has been utilizing to facilitate group exercise. As the recent workshop modality was mainly online, it has not been easy to apply Cityshare, but CIFAL Jeju made a tutorial video so that anyone can watch it again on Youtube and get him/herself involved in group activity. The Cityshare methodology that participants got familiar with enabled them to evaluate how prepared their own city/community is to be greener. Then, as a group they worked on developing a problem tree to identify the root causes of the issue and suggest possible solutions to address the issue, which was presented at the final session. Their ideas and suggestions were met with experts’ feedback, and finaly summarized as an individual action plan proposal.

The main sessions were held with participation of both in-person and virtual presence. Although only a selected number of participants from Korea was able to join at the venue, the workshop served as an opportunity for their networking as well. The workshop effectively linked CIFAL Jeju’s workshop with the 8th International Electric Vehicle Expo.
