CIFAL Jeju organizes Workshop on Role and Significance of Tourism Platform in the Asia-Pacific
29 May 2019, Jeju, Republic of Korea- CIFAL Jeju held the 6th international workshop of 2019 on the “Role and Significance of Tourism Platform in the Asia-Pacific” from 29 May to 1 June, 2019. The event was sponsored by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and held in cooperation with Jeju Tourism Organization.
The workshop gathered 15 participants in the area of tourism in the Asia-Pacific, representing 11 countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, United States, and Vietnam). The workshop aimed to build the capacity of participants on tourism platform development, whilst promoting awareness and recognition on the importance of UN SDGs. Especially, the workshop was held in conjunction with the Jeju Forum for Peace & Prosperity, where a session was held regarding “Possibility of Building a Tourism Cooperation Platform of the Korean Peninsula”. Along with other resource persons, Ms. Myung-sook Suh, founder of Jeju Olle Foundation, was invited to share her experience of establishing Jeju Olle trail, and Dr. Mihee Kang has also contributed to the session as a Rapporteur.
Throughout the workshop, speakers including Mr. Randy Durband (Global Sustainable Tourism Council), Dr. Denis Tolkach (Hong Kong Polytechnic University), Dr. William Cannon Hunter (Kyung Hee University) have shared their expertise regarding the themes of destination imagery, funding, rural and remote area development, inter-sectoral cooperation, governance, and many more. After the experts’ lectures on the first day, the participants were engaged in a group work with case study presentations, tourism trail design, and CityShare exercise, where they shared their ideas and practices and found a possible partner city for collaboration in the future.
At the end of the workshop, attendees expressed their satisfaction, highlighting the overall usefulness and innovative knowledge acquired, and enjoyed their last day with a field trip to sites that have benefitted from collaborative tourism platform such as Camelia Hill, Shinsan-ri Village Café, and Seogwipo Olle traditional market.
